About Checkers

Most online checkers games only offer the American/English rules you already know — an 8×8 board, kings that shuffle one square at a time, and jumps that only look forward. Flip this one to International rules (also called International Draughts or Dutch draughts) and you get the version most of the world actually competes with: a 10×10 board with 20 pieces a side, kings that "fly" across any number of empty squares along a diagonal, men that can capture backward as well as forward, and mandatory chain captures — take a piece and you must keep jumping with it until no capture is left. Switch the view to 3D at any time to play the same match on a tilting, draggable board instead of a flat grid, in either ruleset. The CPU opponent uses depth-limited minimax search with alpha-beta pruning, adjusted per ruleset so it stays sharp on the bigger International board without stalling your browser. Prefer a human opponent to the minimax engine? Create an online room and send the code or link to a friend on their own device — no download or account needed, and the same Classic/International and 2D/3D choices carry straight into the online match.

Our Take on Checkers

We think offering genuine International Draughts rules — not just American Checkers with a different board size, but backward captures for men and true flying kings — is the standout feature here, since most free checkers builds don't bother. The 3D tilting board is a fun option to have but doesn't change the actual gameplay, so treat it as a novelty rather than a reason to switch. It's a strong pick for anyone who's outgrown the American ruleset and wants the version most of the world actually competes with.

Best suited for: Suits players who want a real strategic opponent rather than a time-killer — mandatory jumps mean careless moves get punished immediately, which rewards someone willing to think a few captures ahead.

Multiplayer: Create an online room and send the code or link to play a friend on their own device, with the same Classic/International and 2D/3D choices carrying over.

Difficulty

The core rules (jump to capture, reach the far row to crown) take a minute to learn, but switching to International rules adds flying kings and mandatory chain captures, and the CPU's alpha-beta minimax search is tuned to stay sharp specifically on that bigger 10×10 board.

Checkers Game Modes

Play vs CPU

Face the built-in minimax AI, which searches several moves ahead with alpha-beta pruning instead of picking randomly. Its search depth is tuned separately for Classic and International rules, so it stays sharp on the bigger 10×10 board too.

Quick Match

Get auto-paired with another online opponent through a quick "finding a match" screen — no room code to share, just a fast head-to-head game against a real person.

2 Players

Play locally on the same device — pass control back and forth with a friend sitting next to you, no account or second device needed.

Online Multiplayer

Create a private room and send the code or link to a friend on their own device, anywhere. Your Classic/International ruleset and 2D/3D view choice both carry over into the online match.

How to Play Checkers

Objective

Capture all of the CPU's pieces or leave it with no legal moves.

  • Click a piece, then a highlighted square
  • Capture by jumping over an opponent — jumps are mandatory when available
  • Reach the far row to crown a King
  • Switch to International rules for a 10×10 board, flying kings, and forced multi-jumps
  • Switch to the 3D view to play on a tilting board you can drag to look around
  • Or skip the CPU — create an online room and play a friend on their own device

Desktop Controls

  • Click a piece to select it, then click a highlighted destination square to move or jump
  • Switch American/International rules and 2D/3D view from the footer buttons before or between matches
  • In the 3D view, click a piece then a lit square exactly as in 2D — click and drag instead of releasing in place to orbit the camera around the board
  • Create or join an online room from the lobby screen to play a friend on a separate device, with an in-match emoji reaction button once connected

Mobile Controls

  • Tap exactly where you'd click — piece, then destination square — the same in both 2D and 3D
  • A finger drag on the 3D board orbits the camera instead of tapping a square — lift and tap again in place to select or move a piece
  • Online rooms work identically on phone: create or join from the same lobby, share the room code or link to invite a friend

Playing on Mobile

Play directly in your browser on desktop, phone, or tablet with touch controls built in — nothing to install and no account needed.

Checkers Rules

Board
Classic (American Checkers) is played on an 8×8 board. International Draughts uses a bigger 10×10 board. Either way, only the dark squares are ever in play.
Pieces
Each side starts with 12 pieces in Classic, or 20 pieces in International, filling the dark squares of their first three rows.
Movement
A regular piece (a "man") moves diagonally forward one square at a time onto an empty dark square.
Mandatory captures
If any legal jump is available to you, you must take one — you can't move a different piece instead and skip the capture.
Multiple jumps
If the piece you just jumped with can immediately jump again, you have to keep capturing with that same piece until no further jump is available to it.
Kings
Reach the far row and your piece is crowned a King. In Classic, a King still moves one square at a time, just in any diagonal direction. In International, "flying" Kings can slide any number of empty squares along a diagonal, and capture from a distance.
Winning conditions
You win by capturing every one of your opponent's pieces, or by leaving them with no legal move at all on their turn.

Tips for Checkers

  • Jumps are mandatory in both rulesets, and once a piece starts capturing it must keep chaining hops as long as another capture is available — plan a move knowing you can't stop partway through a multi-jump
  • In International rules, captures follow the majority-capture rule: if any of your pieces can chain-capture more opponents than another available jump, only the longest chain(s) are legal moves — the game won't even offer the shorter jump
  • In International rules specifically, a man that crosses the back row in the middle of a multi-jump does NOT get crowned mid-chain — it keeps capturing as a regular man until the whole sequence ends, only becoming a king on its final landing square. Classic rules crown immediately and end the move the instant a piece reaches the back row, even mid-jump
  • International "flying" kings can capture a piece from any distance down a diagonal and land on any empty square beyond it — use that reach to line up captures a one-square-hop king could never threaten
  • Switching to International rules also switches the CPU to a shallower search (depth 3 vs. depth 4 on the smaller American board) since the 10×10 board is far more expensive to search — don't assume the AI is exactly as sharp in both modes

Checkers — Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Checkers?

Capture all of the CPU's pieces or leave it with no legal moves. Click a piece, then a highlighted square.

Is Checkers free to play?

Yes — Checkers is completely free to play on Playaby, with no downloads, no account, and no in-game purchases.

Yes. Checkers runs directly in your browser, so it works on desktop, phone, and tablet with touch controls built in — there's nothing to install and no extra permissions needed.

What are the controls for Checkers?

Where can I find more board games like Checkers?

Playaby has a full page of free board games you can browse and jump straight into — no downloads required for any of them.

What is the difference between Classic and International checkers rules?

Classic uses the familiar 8×8 board with 12 pieces a side, forward-only jumps, and kings that move one square at a time. International rules (International Draughts) use a 10×10 board with 20 pieces a side, "flying" kings that can move or capture across any number of empty squares, men that can capture backward as well as forward, and mandatory multi-jump chains — capturing a piece forces you to keep capturing with it until no jump remains.

What are flying kings in checkers?

A flying king (used in International rules) isn't limited to one step diagonally like a classic king — it can slide any number of empty squares in a straight diagonal line, and capture an enemy piece from a distance by jumping clear over it to any open square beyond, similar to a bishop in chess.

Can I play checkers in 3D?

Yes — use the 2D / 3D toggle to switch to a tilting 3D board at any point. Drag to rotate the camera, and click a piece and then a lit square to move, in either the Classic or International ruleset.

Can I play checkers online against a friend?

Yes — create a room and share the code or link, and a friend on their own device joins your match directly, no download or account needed. It sits alongside the vs-CPU mode, and both the Classic/International ruleset and the 2D/3D view carry over into the online match.
