About Connect Four

Every disc falls to the lowest empty space in its column. That makes the height of a threat as important as its direction: a gap in a diagonal cannot win the game until the spaces beneath it are filled. The computer takes an immediate win or blocks an immediate loss when available; otherwise, it searches possible continuations up to seven moves deep. It favors central positions when evaluating the board. This is a limited search, not a guarantee of perfect play.

Connect Four is playable instantly at Playaby, completely free with nothing to install.

Our Take on Connect Four

Gravity makes this a planning game: an empty square in a promising diagonal is only useful if a disc can actually land there. Before choosing a move, check the lowest free space in each column and both players’ immediate wins. A fork is useful only when both finishing drops are playable, and filling a support square can give the opponent a winning move directly above it.

Best suited for: Players who want to practice checking landing squares and building threats on a standard 7-column, 6-row board.

Multiplayer: Invite a friend through Create Room or Join Room for a real online match. Quick Match uses a computer opponent with a generated identity.

Difficulty

The computer searches continuations up to seven moves deep after checking immediate wins and blocks. It can anticipate a developing fork, but its limited search does not make it an unbeatable solver.

How to Play Connect Four

Objective

Drop discs to line up four in a row before the CPU does.

  • Click a column to drop your disc
  • Discs stack from the bottom
  • Connect four in any direction to win
  • Or challenge a friend online — create a room and share the code or link

Desktop Controls

  • Click any cell in a column to drop your disc — it falls to the lowest open row in that column
  • Wait roughly half a second after your move for the CPU to respond
  • Use "Reset match" to clear the board while keeping your running score against the CPU

Mobile Controls

  • Tap a column exactly where you'd click — works the same as desktop, no extra gestures needed

Playing on Mobile

Play directly in your browser on desktop, phone, or tablet with touch controls built in — nothing to install and no account needed.

Tips for Connect Four

  • Take a winning drop if you have one; otherwise check whether the opponent can win on the next turn.
  • Count from the bottom of each column before planning a diagonal. A visually empty winning square may not yet be reachable.
  • Build two playable winning threats at once while checking the opponent’s reply. A completed fork can be decisive, but the computer can prevent the setup.

Connect Four — Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Connect Four?

Drop discs to line up four in a row before the CPU does. Click a column to drop your disc.

Is Connect Four free to play?

Yes — Connect Four is completely free to play on Playaby, with no downloads, no account, and no in-game purchases.

Can I play Connect Four on my phone or tablet?

Yes. Connect Four runs directly in your browser, so it works on desktop, phone, and tablet with touch controls built in — there's nothing to install and no extra permissions needed.

What are the controls for Connect Four?

Click a column to drop your disc. Discs stack from the bottom. Connect four in any direction to win. Or challenge a friend online — create a room and share the code or link.

Where can I find more board games like Connect Four?

Playaby has a full page of free board games you can browse and jump straight into — no downloads required for any of them.

What does the computer look ahead for?

It considers alternating moves for both players, rather than only its next disc. A trap that takes a few turns to build can therefore be detected before it is ready. The center-out column order is a search order and tie-break, not a fixed choice on every quiet turn. The pause before a move is presentation timing; waiting longer does not give the opponent a different difficulty level.

Is Quick Match a human opponent?

No. Quick Match is a computer opponent with a generated name and avatar. Use Create Room or Join Room and share the code or link with a friend to play a real person on another device. The solo opponent is not an unbeatable solver, and no opening or checklist guarantees a win against every response.

Why an open line is not always a double threat?

Imagine three of your discs in a horizontal row with an empty square at each end. On the bottom row, both ends may be playable immediately. On a higher row, inspect the supports: if one end has empty spaces beneath it, dropping into that column will land too low. You have one immediate threat, not two. Filling the support can also give the opponent access to a winning square above your disc, so check both colors before making that move.
