About Asteroids

Asteroids runs on a 640x420 canvas with genuine drift physics: thrusting adds velocity in whatever direction your ship is currently facing, and that velocity only decays by 1% per frame, so momentum carries you across the screen — and drifting off one edge wraps you around to the other, just like the 1979 arcade original this clone takes its name and feel from. Rocks start at radius 38 and split into two half-size fragments whenever they're shot, as long as the fragment would still be bigger than an 18-pixel radius, so a single big rock can cascade into a handful of smaller ones before disappearing for good. The scoring quietly rewards finishing the job: points per hit are calculated as 50 minus the rock's radius, meaning a tiny leftover fragment is worth roughly three to four times more than the original boulder it split from. Getting hit costs a life and grants a brief flickering invincibility window rather than ending the run outright, and losing all three lives ends the game and locks in your best score.

Asteroids is playable instantly at Playaby, completely free with nothing to install.

Our Take on Asteroids

The drift physics are the whole appeal — velocity only bleeding off 1% per frame means the ship genuinely carries momentum the way the 1979 original did, instead of the sluggish auto-stop a lot of browser remakes default to. Splitting rocks into ever-smaller fragments until they're too small to split further creates a satisfying cascade, and the flickering invincibility window after a hit is a fair mercy rather than an instant-death punish. Best for players who want an honest arcade-physics remake, not a simplified reskin.

Best suited for: Score-chasers who like squeezing more points out of a fixed ruleset — since points per hit are 50 minus the rock's radius, hunting down tiny leftover fragments actually pays better than the big ones.

Difficulty

Rotating and thrusting is intuitive within a minute, but momentum only decays 1% per frame, so learning to counter-thrust before you drift into a rock takes real practice compared to games with instant stopping.

How to Play Asteroids

Objective

Destroy the drifting asteroids while avoiding collisions.

  • Left / Right to rotate the ship
  • Up to thrust
  • Space to shoot
  • Large rocks split into smaller ones

Desktop Controls

  • Left / Right arrow keys rotate the ship; Up arrow thrusts in the direction you're facing.
  • Spacebar fires (rate-limited by a short cooldown between shots).
  • Click the pause icon to freeze the action mid-run.

Mobile Controls

  • On-screen circular buttons appear below the canvas on small screens: a thrust button (up arrow) plus left/right turn buttons.
  • A larger fire button (flame icon) sits on the right and fires while held.
  • All mobile buttons are hold-to-activate — press and hold to keep turning, thrusting, or firing continuously, the same as holding a key down on desktop.

Playing on Mobile

Play directly in your browser on desktop, phone, or tablet with touch controls built in — nothing to install and no account needed.

Tips for Asteroids

  • Points are calculated as 50 minus the rock's radius, so small leftover fragments are worth noticeably more per hit than the big rocks they split from — chase down the little pieces after a split instead of leaving them.
  • Your ship keeps 99% of its velocity every frame, so tapping thrust in short bursts and coasting the rest of the way is more controllable than holding it down continuously, especially when threading between rocks.
  • Respawning after a lost life gives you a flicker-visible invincibility window (longer at the very start of a run) — use it to reposition away from the crowd rather than immediately trying to shoot.
  • Bullets have a short cooldown between shots and a limited flight range, so firing wildly at long range wastes shots — wait until a rock is closer or directly in your firing line.

Asteroids — Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Asteroids?

Destroy the drifting asteroids while avoiding collisions. Left / Right to rotate the ship.

Is Asteroids free to play?

Yes — Asteroids is completely free to play on Playaby, with no downloads, no account, and no in-game purchases.

Can I play Asteroids on my phone or tablet?

Yes. Asteroids runs directly in your browser, so it works on desktop, phone, and tablet with touch controls built in — there's nothing to install and no extra permissions needed.

What are the controls for Asteroids?

Left / Right to rotate the ship. Up to thrust. Space to shoot. Large rocks split into smaller ones.

Where can I find more arcade games like Asteroids?

Playaby has a full page of free arcade games you can browse and jump straight into — no downloads required for any of them.

Do large rocks split into smaller ones in Asteroids, and how does scoring work?

Yes — any large-enough rock splits into 2 smaller rocks when destroyed; small fragments are destroyed outright with no further split. Points are inversely tied to size, so the smaller fragments from a split are actually worth more per hit than the large rock they came from.

How many lives do I get in Asteroids, and is there invulnerability after respawning?

Three lives — losing one respawns your ship at center screen with a short flicker of invulnerability, and the very first spawn of a run gets an even longer invulnerable window before rocks can hurt you.

Is there a UFO or bonus enemy in Asteroids?

No — there's no UFO or secondary enemy type here, just an endless series of rock waves that respawn the instant the field clears, so it never technically "levels up," it just keeps going.
