About Maze Runner

Maze Runner is a 30-stage campaign called Quiet Escape, split into six five-stage tiers, First Steps, Winding Paths, Hidden Turns, Deep Maze, Lost Corridors, and Master Escape. Each stage carves a fresh "perfect" maze with a recursive-backtracking algorithm, so every layout has exactly one path between start and exit with no loops or hidden shortcuts, and the board itself grows as you climb tiers, from a 9x9 grid in First Steps up to a 19x19 grid in Master Escape. A fog-of-war radius follows your character everywhere and tightens with every tier, from a 6-cell view in First Steps down to just 2 cells by Master Escape. Hidden tiles scattered through the fog only reveal themselves once you step on them: crystal gems pay a flat +150 score plus 3 to 7 crystals depending on your current tier, a move-bonus trims 4 steps off your live move counter for +100, and a vision charge pushes your fog radius out to at least 5 tiles for your next 8 moves. Starting at stage 11, a disguised secret tunnel joins the rotation, a hidden trap that looks identical to every other tile until you trigger it, then randomly teleports you elsewhere in the maze and costs 25 points, and by stage 28 as many as four of these traps can be lurking in a single stage. Move with arrow keys or WASD on desktop, or the on-screen directional pad on touch devices, and your completed stages, crystal total, and score all save automatically to your browser so you can pick up exactly where you left off.

The fog radius is what turns Quiet Escape into real navigation practice instead of a simple find the exit click test. Since only a small radius around you is ever lit at once, and anything you have not personally walked through goes dark again the moment you leave its edge, you cannot lean on scanning the whole board for a shortcut, you have to actually remember which turns you have already tried and which corridors dead end. Every tile you do walk through stays permanently revealed even after it falls outside your shrinking fog radius, so the game is quietly rewarding you for building an accurate mental map as you go rather than testing your reflexes. That pressure only grows as the tiers advance and the radius shrinks from 6 cells down to 2, so the same wall-following instincts and route memory that get you through First Steps stop being optional by the time you reach Master Escape, and holding the shape of a maze in your head becomes the actual skill the game is teaching.

Every stage keeps a live score built from three sources: 5 points for every step you take, an escape bonus that grows with the stage number (400 plus 100 per stage), and crystals earned from both gems and simply finishing a stage. Those crystals fund a real hint economy, the first hint on any stage briefly reveals the entire map for free, but every hint after that costs 20 crystals, so spending them on hints instead of banking them is a genuine trade-off rather than a throwaway option. A fully procedural chiptune soundtrack, generated live with the Web Audio API rather than an audio file, can be muted independently of the sound effects. Clear all 30 stages and the game marks the run fully complete rather than looping you back to an easier one, so there is an actual finish line to chase, not just an endless climb.

Our Take on Maze Runner

We appreciate that every maze is a genuinely solvable perfect maze generated fresh each run, so there's no memorizing a fixed layout — you actually have to read the fog as you go. The escalating trap density late in the campaign is a fair difficulty curve, though losing 25 points and getting teleported by a tile that looks identical to every other one can feel like bad luck as much as a fair challenge. Good for anyone who likes methodical exploration over twitch reactions.

Best suited for: Fits players who want a slower, exploratory puzzle session and don't mind backtracking through fog rather than racing a clock.

Difficulty

Moving through a maze is as simple as arrow keys, but the tightening fog radius — down to just 2 cells by the final tier — turns navigation into a memory test rather than a reflex one, and disguised secret tunnels from stage 11 onward can undo your progress at random.

How to Play Maze Runner

Objective

Clear all 30 stages of Quiet Escape — your sight is limited by fog, so explore carefully to reach the glowing exit.

  • Arrow keys or WASD to move

  • Reach the exit to unlock the next stage

Desktop Controls

  • Arrow keys or WASD to move one cell at a time

Playing on Mobile

Play directly in your browser on desktop, phone, or tablet with touch controls built in — nothing to install and no account needed.

Tips for Maze Runner

  • Bumping into a wall doesn't add to your move counter, so it costs nothing to test a direction and back off if it's blocked.
  • The maze is a "perfect" maze with no loops and exactly one route between any two points, so once you're in a dead end there's no alternate way out except retracing your steps.
  • Try consistent wall-following, always turning the same direction such as always taking the rightmost open path, since the maze has no loops this strategy is guaranteed to eventually reach the exit even with zero visibility of the whole layout.
  • Every cell you've actually walked through stays revealed permanently even after it falls outside your shrinking fog radius, so lean on that persistent trail instead of trying to memorize the layout from a single glance.
  • Not every hidden tile is a reward. From stage 11 onward a disguised secret tunnel can teleport you elsewhere and cost 25 points, so once the stage count climbs, only chase pickups that sit roughly on your route to the exit.
  • Save a vision pickup for when you actually need the extra visibility, since its effect burns down move by move over your next 8 moves whether you use it well or not.
  • Spend your first hint on any stage without hesitation since it's free, but budget carefully after that, since every hint past the first costs 20 crystals.
  • Restart regenerates a fresh maze for your current stage without touching your saved score or crystal total, so if a layout feels unfairly cramped, restarting costs nothing but a little time.

Where can I find more puzzle games like Maze Runner?

Playaby has a full page of free puzzle games you can browse and jump straight into — no downloads required for any of them.

How many stages does Maze Runner have?

30 stages, split into six five-stage tiers: First Steps, Winding Paths, Hidden Turns, Deep Maze, Lost Corridors, and Master Escape, each tier harder than the last. Clearing all 30 marks the whole run complete instead of looping you back to an easier stage.

How is each maze generated?

With a randomized recursive-backtracking algorithm, the classic approach that carves a path cell by cell and backtracks when it hits a dead end. It guarantees a "perfect" maze with exactly one path between the start and the exit and no loops.

Does the maze board get bigger in later stages?

Yes, the board grows with each tier, from a 9x9 grid in First Steps up to a 19x19 grid in Master Escape, always starting in the top-left corner and ending at the bottom-right.

How does the fog of war work in Maze Runner?

A visibility radius follows your character and only lights the tiles within it, so most of the maze stays hidden until you walk near it. That radius tightens with every tier, from a 6-cell view in First Steps down to just 2 cells by Master Escape, though any cell you have actually walked through stays permanently revealed even after you move away from it.

What do the crystals do in Maze Runner?

Crystals are the game's currency. You earn 3 to 7 per gem pickup depending on your current tier, plus a set amount equal to your tier number each time you clear a stage, and you spend them on hints, since every hint after your first free one per stage costs 20 crystals.

Are there any traps hidden among the pickups?

Yes, starting at stage 11 a disguised secret tunnel can be lurking under any unrevealed tile, looking identical to every other hidden pickup until you trigger it. It randomly teleports you elsewhere in the maze and costs 25 points, and by stage 28 as many as four of these traps can appear in a single stage.

Is there a way to see more of the maze?

Yes, in two ways. A vision pickup extends your fog radius out to at least 5 tiles for your next 8 moves, and the hint button reveals the entire map for a moment so you can memorize a route, free once per stage and 20 crystals after that.

Does Maze Runner save my progress?

Yes, your completed stages, currently unlocked stage, crystal total, and score all save automatically to your browser's local storage, so closing the tab and coming back later picks up exactly where you left off instead of restarting from stage 1.
