About Spider Solitaire

The rule that trips up almost everyone new to Spider is the gap between what CAN be placed and what CAN be MOVED together: any card can drop onto a tableau card exactly one rank higher regardless of suit, which is what makes columns fill up with mixed-suit sequences in the first place, but only a run that's genuinely the same suit and consecutive in rank can be picked up and relocated as a group. We think the difficulty ladder here is honest rather than cosmetic — 1 Suit really is the beginner mode, and 4 Suits deals a genuine double deck that behaves like the difficulty experienced Spider players actually mean when they say '4-suit.' The gap between what can be placed (any descending card) and what can be moved as a group (same-suit runs only) is exactly the rule that separates people who've played real Spider from people who haven't, and this build enforces it correctly. It's a slower, more cerebral game than most of what's on the portal, so it won't click for anyone looking for a fast dopamine loop.

Best suited for: Suits patient, planning-first players rather than quick sessions — dealing a new stock row locks out entirely while any column is empty, so protecting empty columns is a real ongoing decision, not a one-off setup choice.

How to Play Spider Solitaire

Objective

Clear all 8 same-suit King-to-Ace runs from a 10-column tableau — pick 1, 2, or 4 suits before you start.

  • Click a face-up card to pick it up along with any cards stacked on it that form a same-suit descending run
  • Click a destination column whose top card is exactly one rank higher — suit does not matter for that landing spot
  • A full King-to-Ace run of one suit clears itself off the column automatically once it forms

Spider Solitaire — Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I place a card on any rank-one-higher card, but not always move a stack of cards together?

Those are two different rules. Any single card (or the top card of a group you're moving) can land on a tableau card exactly one rank higher, regardless of suit — that's what lets mixed-suit sequences build up in a column in the first place. But picking up more than one card at a time requires that whole group to already be a same-suit, consecutive descending run; a mixed-suit sequence is frozen in place as a block until you've cleared it back down to a same-suit stretch.

What do the 1 Suit, 2 Suit, and 4 Suit difficulty options actually change?

1 Suit deals all 104 cards as spades only, which is the classic entry-level version. 2 Suits splits the deck between spades and hearts. 4 Suits deals a genuine double deck across all four suits, which is what most experienced Spider players mean when they talk about the "real" game — more suits means far fewer safe multi-card moves.

Why won't the game let me deal a new row from the stock?

Dealing is blocked whenever any tableau column is completely empty — the same restriction real Spider enforces. Fill every column with at least one card before the stock pile will deal again.

How do completed suit runs get removed in Spider?

Automatically — the instant a King-to-Ace run of a single suit is sitting together at the bottom of a column, it clears itself off the board and counts toward the 8 runs you need to finish the deal. There's nothing to click.
