About Klondike Solitaire

Klondike is the game most people just call "Solitaire" — it takes its name from the Yukon gold rush prospectors said to have played it, and it became a household staple worldwide only after Microsoft bundled it into Windows 3.0 in 1990, reportedly to teach a generation of new PC users how to click and drag a mouse. This build keeps the deal itself completely standard: 52 cards, seven tableau columns dealt one deeper each time with only the last card face up, and four foundations built up Ace to King by suit. The one real decision it hands you up front is the stock rule, and both options here are genuine real-world Klondike variants rather than a house-made shortcut: Draw 1 turns over a single card at a time and is the more forgiving, higher-win-rate version most casual players know, while Draw 3 exposes three at once and only lets you act on the top one, which is closer to the harder variant serious solitaire players consider the "real" challenge. Redeals are unlimited in both modes, matching the relaxed home-play ruleset rather than the stricter, pass-limited "Vegas" scoring variant. An Auto Complete button appears the instant the board reaches a state where every remaining card is visible and the rest of the game is mechanical — no more hidden information left to manage — and finishes the deal out automatically rather than making you click out forty-plus obvious foundation moves by hand. Every move, including stock draws and recycles, pushes onto a full history stack, so Undo (or Ctrl+Z) can walk back through an entire game one step at a time, not just the last few actions.

Our Take on Klondike Solitaire

We appreciate that Auto Complete only appears once the board has genuinely resolved into a fully mechanical endgame — it never skips a decision you'd actually want to make, it just saves you from clicking out forty-plus obvious foundation moves by hand. The full-history Undo (every stock draw and recycle included, not just card moves) makes it a forgiving build for casual play, at the cost of feeling less consequential than a stricter Vegas-rules table would. Recommended for anyone who wants the classic Windows 3.0 solitaire experience without any of its old friction.

Best suited for: Fits a relaxed, low-stakes puzzle session — redeals are unlimited in both draw modes, matching relaxed home-play rules rather than the stricter pass-limited Vegas variant, so there's no punishing scarcity mechanic working against you.

Difficulty

The deal itself is the standard, well-known Klondike setup, so there's nothing new to learn there — the actual choice you're making is Draw 1 versus Draw 3, and Draw 3 (where only the top of three revealed cards is playable) is meaningfully harder and closer to what serious solitaire players consider the real test.

How to Play Klondike Solitaire

Objective

Build all four foundations up from Ace to King, one suit per pile, by working through the tableau and the stock.

  • Click a face-up tableau card to pick it up (and everything stacked on it), then click a destination to drop it
  • Tableau cards stack in descending rank with alternating colors; only a King can start an empty column
  • Click the stock to draw a new card (or 3, in Draw 3 mode) to the waste pile; click an empty stock to recycle the waste
  • Double-click a card to send it straight to its foundation when that move is legal
  • Ctrl+Z (or the Undo button) steps back through your moves, and Auto Complete finishes the deal once every card is face-up

Desktop Controls

  • Click a face-up card to pick it up (and every card stacked on top of it), then click a tableau column or a foundation pile to drop it there
  • Click the same card again to cancel the pick-up without moving anything
  • Double-click a face-up card to send it straight to its foundation if that move is legal
  • Click the stock pile to draw 1 or 3 cards to the waste (set on the start screen); click an empty stock to recycle the waste back into it
  • Ctrl+Z (or the on-screen Undo button) steps back through your moves one at a time, with no cap on how far back you can go

Mobile Controls

  • Tap exactly where you'd click — pick up a card, then tap a destination pile, the same two-tap sequence as desktop
  • Double-tap a card to auto-send it to its foundation
  • Tap the stock pile to draw, and the Undo button works the same as on desktop

Tips for Klondike Solitaire

  • Prefer a move that reveals a face-down card over moving an already exposed card without opening space.
  • Keep track of which king can use an empty column before clearing it; build tableau runs in alternating colors.

Klondike Solitaire — Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Draw 1 and Draw 3 in Klondike?

Draw 1 turns over one stock card at a time and lets you act on it immediately — the more forgiving, higher-win-rate version. Draw 3 turns over three at once but only the top card is playable until it's dealt with, which buries more of the stock out of reach and is the version serious solitaire players consider the real test.

How many times can I go through the stock in this Klondike?

As many as you want. Clicking an empty stock recycles the whole waste pile back into it face-down, with no limit on redeals — the relaxed, standard home-play ruleset rather than the pass-limited "Vegas" scoring variant.

Can I move a card back off a foundation once it's there?

Yes. Click a foundation's top card to pick it up, then click a legal tableau destination — useful for freeing up a card you sent home a little too early.

What does the Auto Complete button do?

It only appears once the stock and waste are empty and every tableau card is already face up — meaning there's no more hidden information left and the rest of the game is just mechanical foundation moves. Clicking it plays those remaining moves out for you automatically.

Is there a limit to how far back Undo goes?

No — every move, including stock draws and waste recycles, is pushed onto a full history stack, so Ctrl+Z (or the Undo button) can walk all the way back through an entire game, not just the last few actions.
