About Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire isn't actually an old Chinese game despite the tiles it borrows — the tile-matching solitaire format was created much later, and its explosive popularity in the West traces specifically to Activision's 1986 computer game Shanghai, which took the imagery of the centuries-old tile game Mahjong and built an entirely new single-player puzzle around it. This build uses the complete, legitimate 144-tile set rather than a trimmed-down version: all nine ranks of Circles, Bamboo, and Characters four times over, all four Winds and all three Dragons four times over, plus the eight bonus tiles — four unique Flowers and four unique Seasons — where the real rule is that any Flower matches any other Flower and any Season matches any other Season, rather than needing an identical pair like every other tile in the set. The tiles are stacked five layers deep into the traditional "Turtle" shape, and a tile only counts as free to select under the same two conditions real Mahjong Solitaire has always used: nothing at all sitting on top of it, and at least one of its long left or right edges completely open, meaning a tile can be fully uncovered from above and still be locked in place if it's pinned tight on both sides. What sets this deal generator apart from a lot of quick clones is that it doesn't just shuffle randomly and hope: it computes a genuine step-by-step clearing sequence through the empty board's geometry first, confirming two specific tiles really can be freed at the same moment before it ever assigns them a matching pair, so every single deal is mathematically guaranteed to have a full solution rather than occasionally locking you into an unwinnable board. That guarantee covers the deal itself, not necessarily whatever order you personally choose to clear it in — real play can still paint itself into a corner — so a Shuffle option appears the moment no legal match exists among the currently free tiles, silently re-solving and redistributing just the tiles still on the board rather than ending your run.

Our Take on Mahjong Solitaire

The standout feature here is the deal generator: it computes an actual step-by-step clearing sequence through the board's geometry before assigning tile pairs, so every layout is provably solvable rather than just probably solvable like a lot of quick clones. The Shuffle option only appears when no legal match currently exists, and it quietly re-solves just the remaining tiles rather than resetting your progress. Good for anyone who wants the calm of the 144-tile Turtle layout without ever hitting a dead board.

Best suited for: Players who want a slower, low-stakes puzzle session with a guaranteed solution, rather than a race against the clock or a risk of getting stuck.

Difficulty

Selecting a free tile is dead simple, but reading which tiles are truly open — uncovered from above and clear on at least one long edge — takes real practice before you stop misclicking on tiles that are actually pinned.

How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

Objective

Clear the 144-tile turtle layout by matching pairs of identical free tiles until nothing is left.

  • Click a free tile (nothing on top of it, and open on its left or right side) to select it
  • Click a second free tile of the same type to match and remove both — any two Flowers match each other, and any two Seasons match each other
  • Every deal is generated to guarantee a full clear exists
  • Hint briefly highlights one available matching pair, and Shuffle reshuffles the remaining tiles if no match is currently available
  • Undo steps back through your last match

Desktop Controls

  • Click a free tile (nothing covering it from above, and open on its left or right side) to select it
  • Click a second free tile of the same type — or any two Flowers, or any two Seasons — to match and remove both
  • Click the same tile again to deselect it without matching
  • Click Hint to briefly highlight one available matching pair, or Shuffle (shown only when no free match currently exists) to reshuffle the tiles still on the board
  • The on-screen Undo button reverses your last match

Mobile Controls

  • Tap exactly where you'd click — tap a free tile, then tap its match — the same two-tap sequence as desktop
  • Hint, Shuffle, and Undo are the same on-screen buttons as desktop, sized for touch

Tips for Mahjong Solitaire

  • Choose a pair that uncovers another tile or opens a blocked side; an available match is not always the most useful one.
  • A visible tile is selectable only if nothing covers it and at least one horizontal side is open. Flowers match other Flowers; Seasons match other Seasons.

Mahjong Solitaire — Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a Mahjong Solitaire tile "free" to select?

Two conditions, both required: nothing at all is stacked on top of it, and at least one of its long left or right edges is completely open. A tile can be fully visible on the top layer and still be locked in place if it's pinned tight by neighbors on both sides.

Do Flower and Season tiles have to match exactly?

No — that's the one exception to the normal matching rule. Any Flower tile matches any other Flower tile, and any Season tile matches any other Season tile, regardless of which specific Flower or Season is pictured on each one. Every other tile in the set needs an identical partner.

Is every Mahjong Solitaire deal in this game actually solvable?

Yes. The deal isn't just randomly shuffled — it's built by first computing a genuine step-by-step clearing sequence through the empty board's geometry, confirming two tiles really can be freed at the same moment, and only then assigning them a matching pair. That guarantees a full solution exists for every deal.

If every deal is solvable, why does a Shuffle button ever show up?

The guarantee covers the original deal, not the specific order you personally choose to clear it in — it's still possible to clear tiles in a sequence that locks the rest of the board. Shuffle only appears once no legal match exists among the currently free tiles, and it silently re-solves and redistributes just the tiles still on the board rather than ending your run.

How many tiles are in this Mahjong Solitaire set?

The complete, standard 144: all nine ranks of Circles, Bamboo, and Characters four times each, all four Winds and all three Dragons four times each, plus four unique Flower tiles and four unique Season tiles.
