About Brick Breaker

Breakout originated at Atari in 1976, reportedly prototyped by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, and the core loop here is the same one that launched a thousand paddle-and-brick clones: a 420×460 court holds 8 columns and 5 rows of bricks — 40 in total, each worth exactly 10 points, so a full clear caps out at a 400-point run. The paddle isn't nudged by key presses in this build; it tracks your mouse or finger's horizontal position on the canvas directly, so wherever your cursor sits, the paddle's center goes. The ball carries real "English" off the paddle: hitting it near either edge adds extra horizontal speed to the bounce angle (up to 1.5x the offset from center), so where you contact the paddle — not just whether you contact it — decides which brick gets hit next. You get 3 lives, shown as hearts, and every miss resets the ball to center court after a 3-2-1 countdown.

Our Take on Brick Breaker

Tracking the paddle directly to cursor position instead of nudging it with key repeats makes this feel noticeably more precise than most Breakout clones we've tried. The added English off the paddle edges gives you real control over which brick gets hit next, which turns a full clear into an actual aiming puzzle rather than luck. Three lives and a capped 400-point ceiling make it a tight, replayable format rather than an endless grind.

Best suited for: Short, focused sessions aiming at a clean 400-point full clear rather than an endless survival test.

Difficulty

Bouncing the ball off a mouse-controlled paddle is immediately intuitive, but the paddle's "English" — extra angle from hitting near the edges — means real control takes some deliberate practice.

How to Play Brick Breaker

Objective

Bounce the ball off your paddle to smash every brick without letting it fall.

  • Move the mouse or Left / Right to slide the paddle
  • Keep the ball in play
  • Clear all bricks to win

Desktop Controls

  • Move the mouse left and right anywhere over the canvas — the paddle follows your cursor's horizontal position directly
  • There's no keyboard control in this build — arrow keys do nothing, only pointer position matters
  • A 3-2-1 countdown plays before the ball launches each time you start or restart

Mobile Controls

  • Drag your finger left and right across the canvas — the paddle follows your finger's horizontal position exactly like it follows the mouse
  • No separate buttons or swipe gestures — just touch and move anywhere on the court

Playing on Mobile

Play directly in your browser on desktop, phone, or tablet with touch controls built in — nothing to install and no account needed.

Tips for Brick Breaker

  • Hitting the ball near the edge of your paddle adds extra horizontal speed to its bounce, letting you angle shots at specific bricks instead of just batting the ball straight up.
  • The paddle snaps to your cursor's exact horizontal position rather than being dragged relative to where you first clicked, so you can reposition instantly by moving your mouse anywhere on the court, not just near the paddle.
  • Every brick is worth a flat 10 points regardless of row or color, so there's no bonus for going after top-row bricks first — prioritize whichever ones are easiest to reach safely.
  • You only get 3 lives total, and a miss resets the ball to dead center with fresh direction, so don't chase risky corner shots late if you're already down to your last life.

Brick Breaker — Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Brick Breaker?

Bounce the ball off your paddle to smash every brick without letting it fall. Move the mouse or Left / Right to slide the paddle.

Is Brick Breaker free to play?

Yes — Brick Breaker is completely free to play on Playaby, with no downloads, no account, and no in-game purchases.

Can I play Brick Breaker on my phone or tablet?

Yes. Brick Breaker runs directly in your browser, so it works on desktop, phone, and tablet with touch controls built in — there's nothing to install and no extra permissions needed.

What are the controls for Brick Breaker?

Move the mouse or Left / Right to slide the paddle. Keep the ball in play. Clear all bricks to win.

Where can I find more arcade games like Brick Breaker?

Playaby has a full page of free arcade games you can browse and jump straight into — no downloads required for any of them.

How many bricks are in a Breakout board, and what are they worth?

The board is 8 columns by 5 rows — exactly 40 bricks — and every brick is worth a flat 10 points regardless of row, alternating between two colors purely for visual contrast.

Can I control the angle the ball bounces off the paddle in Breakout?

Yes — where the ball hits the paddle matters. Striking it near the edge deflects the ball off at a noticeably sharper angle than hitting it dead center, so you can aim shots rather than just returning them straight back up.

Does the ball speed up as I clear bricks in Breakout?

No — ball speed resets to the same fixed velocity after every life lost and never accelerates as the board clears, so the difficulty comes from precision and paddle control rather than an escalating pace. You get 3 lives per run.
