What makes it interesting is that it's a fairly direct test of something psychologists call working memory, which is the small amount of information your brain can actively hold and manipulate at once, as opposed to long term memory where things get stored for good. Most people's working memory tops out somewhere around seven items, give or take a couple, which is part of why the game gets brutally hard right around that same point.

Why the sequence breaks you at a predictable point

If you've noticed that you can usually get through the first six or seven colors without much trouble and then suddenly fall apart, that's not bad luck. It's not really a memory hack, it's just how memory naturally organizes information, and noticing yourself doing it is honestly one of the more interesting parts of playing these games regularly.

Why losing doesn't feel as bad in these games

Compare losing a round of Memory Match to losing a round of Connect Four, and it feels different, even though both are just a loss. Part of that is because memory games test something that feels less like 'you' and more like a temporary limit everyone bumps into eventually. Losing a strategy game can feel like you made a bad decision. Losing a memory game at your personal limit just feels like hitting a wall that was always going to be there.

Can playing memory games actually improve memory long term?

The honest answer is probably not much, at least not in a way that transfers to remembering where you left your keys. What practice does improve is your performance at that specific game, through familiarity with the format and better chunking strategies, rather than a general upgrade to your memory as a whole. That's not a knock on the games. Getting measurably better at something, even something narrow, is satisfying on its own, and that's a perfectly good reason to keep playing.

Whether or not either game makes you smarter in some broader sense, there's something genuinely fun about watching your own limit show up in real time. Simon Says will tell you almost exactly where your working memory caps out, and Memory Match will show you how good your spatial recall actually is once the guessing runs out. Both are worth a few rounds just to find out.
